I am a nutritionist

#1 you should not take prenatal vitamin untill you are pregnant
#2 you should not take a double dose of folate because it can cause anemia

the upper limit of folic acid is 1000mcg (1mg) a day total (including food)

Ideally every women of childbearing age should take a supplement containing 400mcg of folic acid, just in case she become pregnant unexpectedly. Folic acid help makes your baby develop good as far as there spine and brain and it helps you too. I don't know about the amount your taking, if you don't want to go to a doctor at this time you could call a pharmacists and they will help you with the amount and let you know if its to much. Good Luck your on the right track, I was taking Folic Acid to before I got pregnant and a prenatal pill and everything is working out find so keep up the good work. Good Luck and God Bless

I am almost certain that my OB said that 400 mcg of folic acid was the correct amount the vitamin should have. I had problems with the prenatal vitamins during my first pregnancy and he told me to take a childrens chewable vitamin and just to make sure it had the correct amount of folic acid (400mcg). So I would just stick to the prenatal vitamin and skip the extra folic acid dose. Drinking OJ also gives you extra folic acid.

Look on the label for the prenatal vitamins. Some prenatals contain 100% of the recommended folic acid. If so, there is no reason to take extra. Remember, you get folic acid in your diet too, so while it's good to have it, I don't think there is a reason to overdo it. Congrats!

You should stop taking the extra 800 mcg of folic acid so long as your prenatal contains 600 mcg.

Health risk of too much folic acid...According to Wikipedia, the Institute of Medicine has established a tolerable upper intake level (UL) for folate of 1,000 µg for adult men and women, and a UL of 800 µg for pregnant and lactating (breast-feeding) women less than 18 years of age. Supplemental folic acid should not exceed the UL to prevent folic acid from masking symptoms of vitamin B12 deficiency.

Usually pre-natal vitamins have just the right amount of Folic Acid required during pregnancy. I would check with your pharmacist to be sure that you are not taking too much.

First find out if you are pregnant for sure. The prenatal vitamins are all you need.

I wouldn't take anything but the prenatals. The prenatals have everything in them you need. Your best bet would be to ask your dr.

I tell you what, if you take in too much of any kiind of food or vitamin while pregnant, your body will act as if it has food poisoning and make you puke it back up. And you will puke until you have gotten all of it out of your system. With my first pregnancy, I ate three Arby's roast beef sandwiches in one sitting and I was up by 1 am puking. Your body knows how much it can take. If it's too much, you'll know.
