There absolutely has to be a balance between the two. You have to roll the ball with enough power to prevent the ball from excessive deflection once it hits the pins (the weight of the bowling ball is also a factor in deflection -- the lighter the weight, the more deflection there will be). However, rolling the ball with sufficient power isn't going to help you if you aren't getting the ball to the pocket.

If you're thinking about which aspect of your game to develop first, "power" technically would be more important. However, by "power", I don't mean throwing the ball harder. I mean that working on developing a free swing with proper technique on your approach will help you deliver the ball with an appropriate (and consistent) speed.

Once you've gotten the muscle memory in place to repeat the right approach and swing every time, your accuracy in terms of where you place the ball will fall in line, and you'll be able to make the minute adjustments necessary to consistently hit the pocket without throwing off your technique.

On the contrary, you can place the ball in the pocket, but if it is travelling 1 mph with no spin you'll be lucky to drop 6 pins and not end up with a split.

I'd work on power first, then I'd work on placement. Once you've grooved your swing, it won't be difficult to figure out where to place the ball to get maximum benefits.

Placing. Control is where its at. All the power in the world won't help if you gutter the ball consistantly.

the placement b/c you gotta hit the pins...and if you have bad placement then you can throw it hard as you want and not hit many pins...you can have great placement and throw it hard and knock down all the pins!!
