we don't want to tell anyone for the first 2-3 months that we're pregnant, but we have several holiday and dinner parties to attend. not that my wife drinks to excess, but it will be noticeable if she spends 3 hours at a party and doesn't touch a glass of wine. "I'm sick" won't work - everyone knows that excuse already and will see right through it.

again, to repeat, "i'm sick" won't work. That includes ear infections, antibiotics, etc. We will have friends at these parties who know we both enjoy wine. And some of these parties are at our house, where the designated driver excuse won't work. I like the "low carb" diet answer so far - more answers along those lines are helpful. Insights into society's position on drinking and why people ask their friends why they're not drinking are not so helpful...

I carried a glass of wine but didn't drink from it. I had my husband sip it to "try" it, and he took gulps to make it go down. And, I put some in the bathroom sink. Or you could say she is on a no-sugar diet that doesn't include alcohol because your body processes alcohol like sugar. Probably bull*** but I know there is a diet out there that says that.

Well you could probably just tell them that you have been feeling a little sick at your tummy(do not have a fever) and would like a soft drink only. You are not in the mood for any other kind of drink. If they ask you if you are pregnant ask them what kind of question is that. Shouldn't you be able to chose what you want to drink. If you can not do this comfortably then stay at home Real friends shouldn't push you to drink. You could get there early and whisper to the bartender-and tell him to be quiet about it. A strawberry D. to sip on without the alcohol. He could give you a little as perfume.

It has been said before that A glass of wine every now and then is fine. So if you guys go to 2-3 parties in one night, she may be able to have one glass of wine at the last party you visit. It isn't sinister or anything like that to have the occassional glass of wine. Some people may think so, but my Ob/Gyn does suggest the occassional glass to help with braxton-hicks and sometimes even the dilation process. Good luck and congratulations!!!

I would just say that I am taking an antibiotic and that I cant drink while taking it. A small glass of wine wont kill anyone either. Or she can just walk around at the party with this glass of wine and not actually drink it. No one would probably notice.

She's the designanted driver tonight. What about that she drank a ton last night and can't even stand the smell tonight. She is on an antibiotic. Maybe she just holds a glass of wine all night and doesnt drink it, I dont think anyone will notice that she isnt drinking it. Good Luck, and Congratulations!

You drank too much last night and you are extremely hungover...Plus then they'll be amazed about how good you look while being hungover.
Or
You are on a diet and you should drink water or diet coke the rest of the night.
Or
Developed an intolerance to ethal
Or
Something about diabetes and how you can't have wine because of all the sugar in it.
Or
Perhaps you could switch the wine to grape juice while in the bathroom?
Good luck and congratulations!!!

Go buy some cranburry juice, and put it in a empty wine bottle, and then when you two go to the party or the party goes to you, she can poor her own glass of the cranburry juice out of the wine bottle, and everybody will think she's drinking wine with you all, and won't even think of anything. You should try it, I bet it will work. Just don't share it with anybody. Than they will know. (LOL) Hoped I helped.

It's really no ones business who drinks or not. In this day of alcohol addiction, people should be more attuned to that anyway.
But, to answer your question, she can just say "oh, we had wine at dinner, so I'll pass" and carry around a glass of water with a twist. Or say that she is on a diet that limits her calories and she doesn't want to waste them on a glass of wine.

I've been through this myself. I think the key is to be specific.
This works great if you are active or exercise a lot (or you can say you were lifting something heavy, or it just happens).
Tell your wife to claim that she has been having bad muscle spasms due to....(exercise, don't know, slept wrong, moved a heavy table alone, lifted something too heavy). The doctor prescribed Cyclobenzaprine (and/or Vicodin or Lorcet). Mixing alcohol with this medicine will make her very very sleepy.
Cyclobenzaprine is the generic name of a very common muscle relaxant. Mixing alcohol with it will knock you out cold. Muscle spasms can come occur for a ton of reasons (like I said, pick your own) and no one can really say you are not having them.
Vicodin and Lorcet are codine based pain killers (Lorcet is essentially two Vicodin). Codine and alcohol is a sleepy mix too. You can also say she hurt herself or has been having bad headaches (I use Lorcet for migraines on occasion).
Tylenol and alcohol is a bad mix too as it causes liver damage. This is getting into the realm of weak excuses as many take Tylenol before going to bed to lessen hangovers.
If you are a smoker or claiming to try and quit smoking, this excuse will also work for Xyban as mixing alcohol and Xyban will increase your chances of seizures.
The key is to be specific. Pick a particular medicaton. I think Cyclobenzaprine is the best as it is common and for a general problem. Just remember the major side effect is that it makes you VERY tired. Alcohol makes it worse.
Congrats to you and your wife!!!

Tell them she is on antibiotics and that she can not mix. So if she does really start to feel bad you both can excuse yourself. If someone ask what's wrong just say that she has had a stomach virus. This will at least add up to her nausea and any strange odors that may set her off at the party.
Goodluck
