Sounds like it came straight out of one of those hard boiled stories from the 1940's or perhaps a standup routine from the same era! I hadn't heard it before though--that IS a good one!

I've heard it without the granny in it ... but it's an old expession to keep your mouth shut or someone will pop ya in the kisser.
