A friend told me that the "R" on the shift thingy was for racing.. I went to race my car and the next thing I heard was this loud BANG. I can still go forward.

Find another friend that is reliable, - THIS ONE IS NOT!!! You may just have knocked the reverse out on your transmission! At least if you are lucky that is all you have done. Unless you are extremely lucky, it can not be repaired without taking the transmission out of the car. There are a few minor things that can be done with the oil pan pulled off under the transmission, but I don't think any of the things that are available would help you!!

I had this sort of thing happen to me about 45 years ago, It was a 55 DeSoto, and it had the "shift" lever in the dash, - which moved up and down in a "stepped slot", I accidentally "jumped" the slot (going from drive to "low"), -ending up in reverse going about 45 mph, -- it broke my crankshaft in half! That is a very expensive way to find out that "downshifting" an automatic transmission to slow down fast (and make the exhaust "rapp") was a very dumb move!

~cringing and shaking head in belief~ NO NO NO.. You put that shift thingy into "R" for a few seconds then shift back to the "1" shown ,it's past the "D" for drag race.. That would put you into first place !!!!\

If you want banging in your car, the back seat is usually the more comfortable option.
