Because they feel the bad things happen to othrs and not them. My son was killed in 95 by a drunk driver that ran a stop sign and broadsisded our car, the DWI he was charged with in this case was his 4th. He was sentenced to 5 years in prison for vehicular manslaughter and lost his license for 10. My son is gone forever but alredy this man is out and driving again. Last month three 16 year old boys from our town was out drinkng and having a good time rounded a curve too fast and two were killed instantly the other is still in critical condition and will be a parapalegic the rest of his life, the kids parents had the truck they were in towed from the accident site to the school parking lot to try to get a message across to kids it can happen to them too. When you operate a vehicle under the influence of anything you are hurting yourself and anyone you hurt or kill as well as all the innocent people left to deal with the loss or your own family that has to live with knowing you killed someone.

you are right some people don't care who they hurt and they always think that will never happen to them. I'm a nurse and i work on a surgical ward at a large hospital. at least 1 or two a week are my patient because of driving drunk. they are my patient if they are lucky. the alternative is the morgue. i see first hand what drinking and driving does to the patient and their families. several times Ive taken care of parents who have killed their own children while driving drunk. you seem like u are fairly young and i hope u never lose the ideals you have about this. drugs are the same story . so take care.

You are right, they don't care who they hurt. People that are on drugs and that drink a lot don't really care about anything more. Just about how they are going to pay for there next beer, or there next oz. to get high. Trust me I know what I am talking about My own dad has been on meth for 18 years and I know what it is like to live with someone that has to have the kind of stuff. It is hard but you just have to look past it. No one will really know why they have to have these things. So I just look at it this way, "That is their choice not mine and I thank god everyday I don't need stuff like that to make me happy or a better person.

some ppl dont realise how seriousn the situation is, if they spent a few weeks in a hospital emergency department and see the results of this then they would think twice about it

Nope they don't care about anything but themsleves. It's selfishness and stupidity. The "it won't happen to me" thing. Stupidity.

Their thought process is impaired, so they don't know they are driving drunk.
