Yes honey, you need to be careful of what fish you eat while you are pregnant and in what amounts. You are wise to be cautious.
There are some kinds of fish that are not recommended for pregnant women at all. I do believe that these are the fresh water fish such as the ones that are caught in the Great Lakes.
It seems to me that ocean fish that are caught in the very cold Arctic waters are safer.
My knowledge on this subject is a bit sketchy so what you need to do is to speak to your OB/GYN, she or someone in her office will be able to give you the latest information.
Fish can be a wonderful low fat source of protein but you need to eat the right kinds.
Good luck

I avoided fish while I was pregnant, my Doctor advised that I stay away from it, because of the mercury content in some fish, so I did not eat any at all, and I have 2 very healthy children. Stay away from it, but defiantly take the prenatal vitamins, they are very important.

Yes. Fish has DHA which helps in development, however, fish also contains mercury which can cause retardation.
If you eat fish, they suggest small servings 2-3 times a week. If you're going with Tuna, stick with Light Tuna (contains less mercury than regular tuna).
I was told to stick with fish that are higher up on the food chain (save for shark).
Avoid bottom feeders like catfish & muscles (oysters, clams, scallops)
If you're simply eatting fish for the DHA, you can buy pills OTC now. Emfamile makes a DHA pill.
As quoted:

"Although methylmercury toxicity has been shown to harm the developing nervous system of a fetus, you don't need to entirely give up fish during your pregnancy. Fish is a good source of low-fat protein and essential fatty acids. It's true that the larger, longer-lived fish -- such as tuna -- contain high levels of methylmercury, but you can still eat it as long as you don't exceed the recommended amounts. Tuna consumption should be limited to seven ounces (about a can) per week. According to the FDA (Food and Drug Administration), all pregnant women should avoid shark, swordfish, tilefish, and king mackerel. Other fish such as shellfish, canned fish, smaller ocean fish, or farm-raised fish can safely be eaten up to 12 ounces per week (or about two meals)."

Swordfish and shark taste great--especially grilled or broiled. But reports that these and some other large predatory fish may contain methyl mercury levels in excess of the Food and Drug Administration's 1 part per million (ppm) limit has dampened some fish lovers' appetites.
FDA scientists responsible for seafood safety are also concerned about the safety of the eating these types of fish, but they agree that the fish are safe, provided they are eaten infrequently (no more than once a week) as part of a balanced diet.
Mercury Is Everywhere
Mercury occurs naturally in the environment. According to FDA toxicologist Mike Bolger, Ph.D., approximately 2,700 to 6,000 tons of mercury are released annually into the atmosphere naturally by degassing from the Earth's crust and oceans. Another 2,000 to 3,000 tons are released annually into the atmosphere by human activities, primarily from burning household and industrial wastes, and especially from fossil fuels such as coal.
Mercury vapor is easily transported in the atmosphere, deposited on land and water, and then, in part, released again to the atmosphere. trace amounts of mercury are soluble in bodies of water, where bacteria can cause chemical changes that transform mercury to methyl mercury, a more toxic form.
Fish absorb methyl mercury from water as it passes over their gills and as they feed on aquatic organisms. Larger predator fish are exposed to higher levels of methyl mercury from their prey.

from all the crap i heard from health digest, us news and abc news...i would not eat it.
traces of mercury have been found in many cases of autism in children.
fish may be 'healthy' to some people, but there are other safer alternatives for protein and other needed vitamins and minerals.
i wouldnt chance it. i did not eat any fish of any kind while i was pregnant.
read up on it. ask questions. then make the decision yourself.

Most nutritionists say we should limit servings of fish to just a few times a week. Some species even less! Unfortunately we've polluted the waters so badly that all creatures that live there are carrying one form or another of our pollutants! :-(=

Tuna has a lot of mercury in it! Pregnant women and children are not supposed to eat a lot of it. So, if you like Tuna don't eat it until after the birth of you child!
