Not quite sure of what you are asking. The obvious services they advertise such as Insurance, banking and Telephones with the main stay service of providing groceries.They also provide one of the best logistics services in the country along with their buying abilities. The other big companies like Sainsbury and Asda etc may be almost equal to it.
They buy under contract and move tons of food and groceries across continents and the UK with phenomenal speed. Fresh produce can be growing some where in Europe be cut washed packeaged and on the shelves wihtin two days.
It would not happen if smaller companies were our only choice. Many of the once seasonal items we can buy today it would not have been possible to have out of our own climatic season as it would have rotted before it had reached the shelf.
If food and groceries were a government run service we would experience shortages an a regular basis.
