That nurse was totally out of order. Go somewhere else and tell them what happened, and what the nurse said. Ask for considerate treatment.
Its not unusual for it to be very mildly uncomfortable, but its better than taking the risk of not having it done.

Honestly, it is not supposed to make you bleed or cause bad pain unless it was performed incorrectly. There are 2 ways 1 is with a long cotton Q-tip which is typical the other I have seen is a sort of fuzzy pipecleaner. And another thing that nurse should not be saying anything or implying anything, she should not be the one performing the test and is there to back-up the OBGYN(this is only true in the OBGYN elsewhere nurses do not merely assist) .I suggest getting a new OBGYN for reasons of feeling comfortable. It sounds like they werent to caring about individuals and treated you like a number. Pick an OBGYN and not a GYN because since they deal with pregnant women and non pregnant women they are more gentle and caring. Don't let a past experience with incompetent medical staff keep you from getting any tests. A woman if she has had 3 consecutive negative results on pap smears she can choose to be seen every 3 years ..but i recommend going every year because anything can develop in 3 years. Please take my advice and all will be fine...but some women have been prescribed a light sedative to take right before these simple tests due to stress. Good luck and don't go back where you went before, you dont have to take that..........ps it should not hurt or bleed after...you can have a very mild discomfort afterwards but not pain....believe me no matter what anybody says you dont have to take it when there should be nothing to take go to the OBGYN.

i can honestly sympathise u with this one. i ve recently had a hysterectomy so dont need one anymore but everytime i went to get one i just seized up. its a horrible procedure. they always say relax dont they ??? well how can u relax when u see a great big silver thingy coming towards u!!!!

i think the best thing to do is either chew some gum and this might help and then bite down if its uncomfortable or take deep breaths.

it obviously shouldnt have bled - some of these nurses are quite rough too - do u think she did it properly? Hope u get a different nurse this time.

remember deep breaths.

The symptoms you have related sound like you had a low blood sugar episode, before, during or after the PAP smear test.

Check out the symptoms at www.hufa.org - the symptoms link.

If this sounds likely, then make sure you eat a good meal about one hour before your test. Try to have salmon or tuna (about 3-5 ounces) as part of the meal, or some other kind of meat or vegetable protein.

Let the nurse know what happened at your last test and that you are anxious. Ask them to explain what they are doing before they do it, which may help you relax (the key to keeping it uncomfortable but not painful). And let them know if you are a virgin (which might explain the discomfort and bleeding the last time).

My boyfriend always takes me to the movies and shopping afterwards, so I always just try to focus on that while they do the procedure. You may want to plan a trip afterwards so that you will be focused on that during the pap smear and not actually thinking about what they are doing. Breathing helps too!

Try and go in beforehand and talk to the Nurse about how you are feeling, most are really understanding and will be extra gentle.

What I do is, I look at the ceiling, and try deep breathing exercises. You have to try and relax otherwise if you tense up it makes it much worse. Maybe try and imagine you are in a peaceful place, on a beach or somewhere that you remember being really happy. Good luck.

please please please go for your smears, as has been suggested go somewhere else for it to be done can you not go to your gp, I'm really sorry you had a very bad experience at your last one but they really can save lives, they pick up changes in the cells of the cervix and left untreated some of these changes can turn into cancer, I went for a routine smear where mild abnormalities were found, after two follow ups, at six monthly intervals my abnormalities had turned into cancer for which I had to have a radical hysterectomy, if I hadn't taken up the invitation for a smear I wouldn't be sitting here typing this reply.

There is a wonderfull site you may want to have a look at it may help your anxieties xxx www.jotrust.co.uk

My Wife had the same problem, she was terrified. So she went to the doctor and he gave her a couple tranquilisers to take before the test to calm her down.
