you need a CD writer (most new computers come with a writer instead of just a player) and a writable CD. These come in spindles of 25, 50 or more.
Put the CD in the Writer. In windows XP, a blank window will open for the CD writer. Open the folder that contains the file you want to write in a separate window. Select the files or folders that you want to copy and drag them to the CD window, dropping them in the white space. If your My documents folder is small enough, you can copy the entire folder, which backs up most of your personal data.
Once you have copied the filed you want to the CD window, click on the link at the left that says "Write files to CD." (or something very close to that. It is on the top of the left column.) Follow through on questions in the wizard. Note, if your files/folders are too big, it will tell you, and you have to remove some files/folders until it is small enough.
When your copy is done, the CD will pop out, and you should label it with a Sharpie -- a soft waterproof tipped pen.

This should work for you, but you'll have to have the (copy to) button active just above your address bar. To do this, right click on an empty space, drop down to customize, then select all options that you want. From there go to my computer and click on C main hard drive, go down to folder were file is, should be programs, open it, and find the file you want to transfer, highlight it, then click the copy to icon, when window opens, locate your CD Rom drive that your going to write to, click on it, selecting copy to, you should see one folder transfering paper to another folder. I know this is a long list of instructions, maybe someone can show you a shorter way, good luck.
