the shinobi (ninja) are japanese, the chinese rendition that inspired the emergence of the japanese ninja are known as moshu nanren. the ninja culture has been in existance for over 900 years if you wish to know more on the ninja I sugest reading the history of ninjutsu by Masaki Hatsumi.

The art of Ninjutsu started in 11th century feudal Japan. An injured warrior had escaped into the Japanese mountains and was treated by a hermit who was living in the mountains, the warrior stayed with the hermit for a time and between them they created the fighting art of Ninjutsu.
