Attempt to detain the person - if successsfull contact security or dial 999 and get the police round asap
telling police:
- Where they have been detained (which room in the shop)
- What they attempted to take
- if you can try and get the details of the offender to pass to police - but this is not always possible
If you were unsuccessfull in detaining the person - Notify security and find your non-emergency tel. number for the police (usually a 0845 number) -
Tell them you just had someone attempt to shoplift / or shoplift
Tell them what you saw
Tell them what the person looked like - Skin Colour / Gender / Age / Build / Height / Hair colour / Clothing description from the top down
A Direction of travel ( on foot in a car and to where?)
Police will keep an eye out for the guy
If you store has a radio link with other shops in the centre / high street pass them the same information for circulation
-
Your perfect rounded answer would include the actions taken above - it shows you have done everything in your power possible to deal with the situation
Hope this helps

When I was 16ish I had a part time job in a small papershop in the bus station I was warned that if I thought I saw someone shoplifting I needed to be 200% sure because if I acciused them and they haddnt then I could be sued at 16 for 4 hours a week I didnt feel it was worth the risk so I would have let them walk out with it

First thing first, never handle it yourself, tell to security. Legally it's not shoplifting unless the person hasn't left the shop without paying.
Secondly, u r not trained to do so tell the security. Because if u wrongly idenfity someone as a shoplifter, he can easily sue the company. Also bad reputation to the retailer.

I would report it immediate to security if they have one or the person who is above me.
If no one is about and you where 100% sure someone had stolen as you had seen it with your own eyes I would wait until by the door and then ask if they have anything they have forgotten to pay for.
I would not panic stay calm and find someone another assistant to help do not do it on your own in this day and age may have a knife you come first. They would rather have a safe assistant than an injured one i am sure.

It's probably best to say you'd quietly and calmly alert one of the sales assitants to that person and tell them what you saw, then walk away. Best let the sales assistant decide to either call security or observe the person themselves. They can't take a customer's word for it that someone else has been stealing -- what if it's one mate trying to get another mate into trouble just for a laugh? Sales assistants are trained to use their best judgement and not jump to conclusions, which could otherwise be embarrassing.

I used to work uin a shop. The right answer would be to notify another member of staff (preferably a manager) and keep an eye on the person. Never approach the person and you can't accuse them of stealing until they have left the shop becasue technically they could turn round and say it's only in their pocket until they get to the check out!!
Hope this helps xx

at the same time as confronted with any question of the "provide me an get mutually at the same time as/what might want to you do if" the perfect attitude is to installation the repute gadget: difficulty, job action outcome. effectively it is a question of non-public duty interior of team dynamics. subsequently, in deploying movie star, starting off with the top result frequently makes the STA bit a lot less complicated to outline In difficulty you are able to verify the prospect: is there video, how on the point of the door are they, are they a common face? this may be the time to convey in the regulations. commonly, shops do not want you "being the hero" on my own, as except for anxious different clientele you would possibly want to sue the shop if left injured/lifeless afterwards Your job is to exhibit screen the alleged shop lifters visual attraction and awesome good factors, and report to different: safe practices, administration, different team contributors. the dep. shops team job is to maintain the shop lifter for extra analyze. as a outcome the action you ought to take might want to be to flow to the front of the door/significant go out, to report the information to different team contributors. the top result might want to be that both the team comprehend the shop lifter, or have altered the police to let them carry close the shop lifter. feels like you probably did properly, yet solid success besides!

I think you have to catch them outside the store, so I'd tell a manager or security person to be at the door and be able to say what items were taken.

Say that you'd confront the person and tell them that unless they put the item back and ceased that sort of behavior, you'd be forced to go to a manager about it. Indicate that you'd feel bad about turning in somebody that you have a good working relation ship with, but that its just the only ethical thing to do. Can't lose with that answer. :)
