I think most of the cultural practices originated in the feudal times and feudalism is alive and well in almost every culture even today.the feudal lords{The Rich,The Religion,and corrupt}always have resisted the change and to achieve their goals they generally used the biggest weapon they have to keep the masses ignorant and uneducated with constant barrage of propaganda and other similar schemes like patriotism,color barrier and bribe.If we look deeply almost all the countries and cultures are in the same boat.
