I think this is an exaggerated statement. Possibly a much misunderstood concept. As they say... you cannot mistake a tree for a forest.
If my mother had been selfish I would have been alive now, to respond to this question. If my teacher had been selfish I would not able to use this computer. At every point in life some or the other has been NOT selfish . That is the creation is , be it human , anmals or birds.
Yes . There are exceptions. The much admired bird Cuckoo, does not lay its eggs in her nest. It is so selfish that it lays its eggs in a crow`s nest so that the crow can take care.!There are many Human cuckoos too.

Do not generalize the question. There were & are people who will donate anything they have to people even when they are bankrupt. That is why the proverb came that charity begins at home meaning that one should take care of himself before doing chariety. Normally people have selfish tendency because they want to posess the things/goods / services for themselves so that they can enjoy the same. The people who are wiser and learned and know the values of life would never be selfish and all these qualities can be captured by anybody who reads & understands BHAGAVADGITA. Hence please read Bhagavad Gita immediately after reading this. God bless you.

To a degree one should practice selfishness for it gives one the prides of self confidence, self esteem etc. According the the novelist Ayn Rand who had written a numerous novels eulogising the virtue of selfishness, the world would get better if one gets selfish and make an independent contribution to the betterment of life. Her book titled, 'The virtue of selfishness', makes a nice reading and her books such as 'Fountain Head', 'Atlas Shrugged' have made people sit up and practice the 'art of selfishness. Selfishness to a positive degree is always welcome and for more to know on this subject I would strongly recommend you to study one of the above. All the best.

There are no absolutes. Selfishness represents individual survival instinct. Selflessness, altruism represents the preservation of the society. The human instinct is balanced between the two. You should work to preserve society, because you are too weak to live without your society. And when society isnot in danger you should look our for yourself. All individuals are somewhere between these two extremes. And any personality type has some value in out fight for survival. When in doubt just consider this: if it weren't useful somehow, nature wouldn't put it there.
Of course, on daily basis, you might think selfish people arenot aware that their behaviour is hurting the society. In that aspect, it is rather some kind of ignorance.

All the so-called vices come under the umbrella of selfishness. Greed, vanity, etc. are obvious ones. But pride, sloth (laziness), etc. are also manifestations of selfishness.
In my opinion selfishness is very wrongly regarded as a vice. Selfishness is necessary for survival. Survival requires that we be better off in some way than our fellows. We must have an edge over them. Look at the animal world. See how they compete with each other for their food, mates, etc. If they didn't, they'd be dead in time -- at individual as well as species level.
Are we any different? We humans have just taken the same concept of animals to a more "sophisticated" level. I would want to have things at your expense. Why shouldn't I be better off than you? If I am, then my chance of survival will be a little better than yours. If I have more money by keeping you poor, I can afford the best doctors, whereas you might just have to cope as best you can on inferior treatment. Are my survival chances not better than yours?
I mentioned "sophisticated" levels above. But in times of stress do we not throw the little humanity we have to the winds? In case of a fire in a theatre, do we not witness stampedes where people uncaringly trample over one another, without regard to whether the downtrodden are dying under our very feet? With a little thought, we could walk out of the theatre in single file and the stampede could very much be avoided. But we didn't. Why? Our instinct for survival. The way people rush to get into trains and buses jostling and pushing others behind is another example of our "fight" for survival. Why should you get into the bus, and I get left behind, and perhaps be late to work and lose a day's wages. Better you lose the wages. I must survive at your expense.
Don't people kill for greed, jealousy, lust? The motivating factor? Better chances to survive at the other person's cost.
Do you get my point, my friend? It is our inner drive to survive, and the fear that we may not, that instinctively prompts us to behave the way we do. It's nature, human or otherwise. Let's face it and accept it for what it is.

We are all selfish by nature. To what degree we show up in life varies. I've dedicated my life to taking care of disabled people. There is a selfishness in that. It is something that I want for myself. To feel like i'm making a difference in the lives of another. Being selfish is in fact doing for one's self. All of our choices everyday are for our selves. Whether they are doing something for someone else....or for our selves. Whether we think someone else is forcing us to do something against our will...we are still deciding to let them be more powerful than we are. We are perhaps thinking that the best way to respond in this situation is to let them have their way. It's our choice for survival.

It's all because of our inborn sinful nature. Looking out for #1 started way back at the fall of Adam and Eve. Check it all out in the Bible. Ever notice that even little babies want for themselves and little children know how to lie without being taught. They have to be taught how to share, care for others, and tell the truth. Those things just don't come naturally!
