Please do not feed your baby until at least 6 months old!! Their digestive system that is mature enough to handle solids. American and Canadian Pediatric Society recommend that you only feed them breastmilk and/or formula until then. You are putting them at higher risk of allergies when you start them on food too early.

And you don’t need to give them water or juice or anything else until they are one years old. And they recommend giving WATER before Juice and juice should be watered down.

Remember you have to feed this kid for the rest of your life…..so what’s the rush?

Here’s what to feed your child:

Age: Birth to 4 months------------
Feeding behavior
• Rooting reflex helps your baby turn toward a nipple to find nourishment
What to feed
• Breast milk or formula ONLY •
Your baby's digestive tract is still developing, which is why solid food is off limits for now.

From 4-6 months------------
Signs of readiness for solid food
Your baby probably won't do all these things — they're just clues to watch for.
• Can hold head up
• Sits well in highchair
• Makes chewing motions
• Shows significant weight gain (birth weight has doubled)
• Shows interest in food
• Can close mouth around a spoon
• Can move food from front to back of mouth
• Can move tongue back and forth, but is losing tendency to push food out with tongue
• Seems hungry after 8 to 10 feedings of breast milk or 40 oz. of formula in a day
• Is teething
What to feed
• Breast milk or formula, PLUS
• Semi-liquid iron-fortified rice cereal, THEN
• Other grain cereals like oats or barley

And foods to avoid for your baby

I believe rice cereal is OK @four months. Baby food probably around six. Contrary to popular advise when you start giving baby food start with veggies. Fruits have a lot more sugar and therefore end up being liked more. Some baby's will refuse veggies if given fruits for awhile first. Also no honey or cows milk till over 12 months. Honey can cause botulism and milk is not easily digested possibly causing fissures in the stomach and intestinal linings

The best time is when formula or breast milk are no longer satisfying to baby. My grand-daughter is only 12 wks old, and has been on cereal for weeks, and is now starting baby foods.
Each infant's development is different, so it is hard to set a time frame, however, do not listen to those quack doctors who say babies should have nothing but milk for the first year....your baby will thank you!

It depends on what you want to do. Babyfood jars are age appropriate so you can see what can be given at what age on the jar. They usually need extra iron starting at 6 months, if you are nursing. When you do introduce other foods do so one at a time to test for allergies. Give only one new food over a 3 day period. I'm still nursing my 14 month old and just started giving him rice crackers when he got his first teeth. I now also give him bananas, whole grain rice, fruits on occasion but he's still mostly nursed.

You don't want to start baby food too early as they have found that if you do your child will be more prone to food allergies. You should really talk to your doctor, they will be able to tell you when your child is ready for food. You'll want to start with single grain cereal and veggies first. Custard style yogurt is great too. Mine never would eat any of the baby food meats (and still aren't big meat eaters although they ate a larger verity of veggies when they were babies..). Have your camera ready when you give that first spoonful....it's great! l0l :)

It's best for the baby's health to wait until they are 6 months old. If they are put on food too soon, it can contribute to them getting diabetes later on in life. It's best to discuss this with your pediatrician though.
