"England" did not exist in Roman times so to speak. There were loosely affiliated tribes that held very tenuous alliances, whose common enemy was Rome. In fact, Rome was never really defeated in Britain. The Romans could no longer support their colonies abroad because of being under constant attack from N. European tribes. (i.e. Goths, Visigoths, Vandals, Huns..) The Roman Empire began to crumble in the 400-500 A.D. period. With the corrupt Caesars, the move of the capital to Constantinople, dwindling treasury, the rise of Christianity, and constant attacks from northern tribes, Britain was abandoned by Rome as it collapsed. The power vacume was eventually exploited by the Norman French under the leadership of "William the conquerer" or as he referred to himself, "William, Duke of Aquitaine". He himself was a self-styled Romanesque type of leader having borrowed heavily from his Roman predecessors.

Rome conquered and occupied large parts of Britain; they built a wall to keep the Picts out in the north and they fortified the west against the Welsh. They only left when their empire began to crumble in the 5th century.
