on the answer or the persons picture, or maybe their profile, or perhaps you choose based on gender?
I go strickly by the answer itself.

The answer, of course. I can always contact someone if I like their avatar. (If they allow it.) If not, then I can give an aside in my comment upon best answer. Never would I give 'best' based on profile. If I wanted to say something about that, I would again attempt to contact the person, if unavailable, I would keep my comments to myself.

I base it on the answer. I'm a guy and don't believe in the gender thing. I believe women are just as smart, and vote for them as much as I do men. People are bad to answer a question, and not really answer what the person was asking, thus they give more of an opinion than they do the answer. That drives me crazy! People should just answer the question and leave the comments to themselves. I base it on the context of the question, and how well the answer pertains to the question, as well as how many votes the answer has. If I'm sure of the answer, and see a lot of people voting for a bad answer, I vote bad answer to them. OK... Have Fun!!!

The ONLY time I use things like that is if I really can't decide between two answers.
In that case I give it to the person who has the lower level or, if they have the same level, the fewer points to offer them a hand up; I doubt anybody at a higher level would object to that.
Otherwise, it's answers only.

By the answer itself, I am looking for thoroughness, informative and maturity. Alot of answers given are so immature. Thats my pet peeve. If you have all three of the above you have my vote.

By the answer but if it's someone who is known to give pissy and rude answers but managed to give a good one to me, I might not give them best answer.
If there aren't best answers, I will either go with someone I know or if someone is level 1/2
