Help me understand this please: I'm not that music savvy, but I know there are 8 musical notes in total, and different combinations of them is what makes music. With thousands of hundreds of thousands of artists that exist and have existed, will we as humans use all the possible combinations? Are we reaching that point? Is that why everything sounds the same, or bears a resemblance to another muisc piece by someone else? And also, so many artists are just doing covers, remixes. Is it because there is no more original music to make?

Oh no - never. Classical music got up its own backside a couple of decades ago with modern composers like George Benjamin inventing instruments that ascended/descended in quarter rather than half tones, but everybody realised that sounded rubbish and was completely unnecessary. Someone, somewhere will always do something different with what we have. Sad thing is, half the time they never make the mainstream as they are ahead of their time and only end up having an influence on artists who take the basic innovation and chuck a diluted version of it into what the masses deem pallatable and a new genre is 'born'. Or something.

We will not ever run out of music. It's true that there are only so many notes but there are other things to consider such as tempo, guitar effects, vocal styles and melodies and many more. There may be a Nirvana song with the same notes as a another song but the song sounds way different. The Bush song "Glycerine" is the same notes as Green Day's song "When I Come Around". Do they sound alike?

All music, and art for that matter, is someone's interpretation of the work of others. Nothing is truly original. While in the recent past there have been a lot of remixes and covers it's all part of the evolution of music, a stage, if you will. Humans will keep innovating because that's our nature. There will be more 'original music' to make, youi can be sure of that.

Lord I hope not!! This will never happen, with so much going on in the world there will always be a change in peoples tastes and influences. The problem is, is that people try just to make money, not only in the music they make but also what labels choose to make and what radio stations choose to play. So if you really want to experience good music, you need to go find it for yourself. It may not come to you.

with the sharps/flats there are 12 notes in the chromatic scale. it's obvious that it's all been done before. you want the answer..... 12X12X12X12X12X12X12X12X12X12X12X12 square. John Coltrane pushed it as far as it can go.... that's it... there's nothing left now. just an impression of creativity. Machines make most of the music you hear these days. Let's see any modern band play without the use of machines, see if they can stand up to say... James Brown or Hank Ballard and the midnighters. You'd see a lot of "rock stars" hangin' their heads low in defeat.

I think we already did! Most newer music isn't worth listening too, with the exception of a few bands:
Red Hot Chili Peppers, Audioslave, The White Stripes, Jet, Tool, Buck Cherry, Velvet Revolver, and Shinedown.

I was about to ask the same question as you, and I'm pretty scared of the world reaching a state like that. I think it's definitely harder for new bands to sound "different:" because it often feels like everything's already been tried out. still, we can always hope that innovation never dies!

I don't think were actually going to 'run' out of music....it probably isn't anymore original music to make.....we just have to wait and see what happens. But there are artists out there that have their own beats etc.

I seriously think that we will never run out of music. There are so many possibilities with music and with limitless options it would be impossible to run out of music
