Why is it that our husbands who are trained to pay attention to everything going on around them can't pay attention to what is going on around them at home? My husband has completely gone MIA when it comes to things at home, including our 9 month old, leaving me to be 99% responsible to take care of things around the house. Whenever I confront him he says that he will start helping more, and that last for about a day, and then is it right back to the way things were. We have lived in our house for 2 years, and he still looks for things like we just moved in yesterday and when he does find them, can't be bothered to pick up after himself. Any suggestions, please?

Trust me, it isn't the fact that he is a police officer....HE IS A MAN! and like a poster before me said, they need a mother, not a wife. My husband does very little around the house. If I ask him to start helping out then he does for a day or two and then it is right back to where we were before. What I love is that he will complain that he doesn't have any clean socks and looks at me....HELLO! Can he not load the washer and do a load of laundry for himself?!

Firstly, Sweetpea, don't nag. That is a deadringer for your marriage. You must accept that men will never be as efficient as women in the house. Thats the way they are. So, don't expect that he will change much. But you can make him help a bit by going on strike. If he throws things on the floor or wherever, just leave it there. In time he will get the message! If you can't live with such a mess, then warn up front that you are going to give his stuff away if you find it where it does not belong. And do it! Next time he wants to throw something around, he'll think twice. Good luck.

I'm not married to a police officer but my family has a long line of officer in it, I know exactly what your going through. Hopefully he will realise (like my Father did) that as much as he loves his job there are other more important things. Good luck I wish you and your family all the best.

Because he knows you'll do it if he doesn't. Try ignoring what he does, leave his clothes on the floor for a few weeks and let the house get dirty. That may be hard to do but he'll notice and then you can tell him if he doesn't care about the house why should you.

How is this in any way associated with the career field of a police officer? Quite frankly it sounds like the complaint of any red blooded American housewife regarding her husband. I don't quite see the connection here.

Care to amplify?

My hubby is a plumber and he does the same things so don't think it's just police! I can't help you but I can tell you nagging don't do a thing!!!

Because he has to pay attention to detail all day every day at work, and when he finally gets home he just wants to relax. Leave him be.
