Up until 200 - 400 years ago strangers meant trouble. They were barbarians who were going to loot rape and pillage, or outcasts from their own village for some reason, or thieves or lepers. They might be traders, but if they were they would probably cheat you. (The honest traders came every year and were not strangers.) They might be invaders who would not only loot, rape and pillage, but would steal your village's land and force you to obey their king.
So, "different is bad" became almost instinctive.
People judge books before they read them. They use the cover, the author or a suggestion from a critic or friend. They don't go into the library or bookstore and read the first chapter of every novel before they decide.
People judge restaurants by appearances or on suggestions from critics or friends. A restaurant with a dirty front window and a soiled tablecloths won't last long. People travelling on business don't go the to restaurant district and sample a bite from each one until they find one they like. They look for a clean place with an interesting menu in the window.
People judge other people the same way - appearances. Sometimes it is unfair. If you were walking along a street in a big city at night and saw a group of 10 - 12 older teens, they might be a gang. They might be the local Baptist Church Youth Choir going out for pizza after practice. If you go the other way you may insult them. If you walk right past them they may rob or rape you. Most people would be wary in a situation like that. They aren't being evil. Their instincts are kicking in.

Definition of discrimination:
1) The ability or power to see or make fine distinctions; discernment.
2) Treatment or consideration based on class or category rather than individual merit; partiality or prejudice
The definition of racism:
1)The belief that race accounts for differences in human character or ability and that a particular race is superior to others.
2) Discrimination or prejudice based on race.
It's hard not to give a reason why discrimination started, and not the reason why there is racism. They are more or less the same thing. It all boils down to a lack of respect because there seems to be a need for some to put themselves in a higher class than others. It's more or less an opposition of diversity. Just look at how many forms of discrimination there are today.

It started when human civilisation started. Its human nature to discriminate. It gives us a false sense of security to discriminate against others. Its a sighn of weakness really. If someone is discriminating against you, dont worry about it.

I discriminate because I'm a true son of the White God, White is right and as soon as you relize your place in society, the happier you'll be.

Whoever your teacher wants you to accuse they would reply "We didn't start the fire, it was always burning since the world's been turning".
