I'm rephrasing a question previously posted as the answers I received was not what I was looking for. When introducing solids to a baby, breast milk/formula is still the main source of nutrition. But the older they get, less milk they have as meals. When do solids become the main source of their meals and formula/breast milk become secondary ?

I would say about 10-12 months.....and for sure after they turn 1.

Here is a link for feeding your baby.........and you can see from the chart how the milk is decreased slowly......

I have 3 children. With each of mine I introduced baby food at about 6 months, but formula was still the main source of meals until about 9 months to 1 year of age.

Breast milk will always remain primary. In certain countries and also in certain American homes a lot of mothers feed their babies breast milk till 2 years (minimum).Although they start with solid foods after 12 months they don't stop treating breast milk as primary. So what evr floats your boat you should try it.

When my children were infants, our pediatrician said to begin adding "solids" starting with rice cereal at 6 weeks. Then we were to add something new each week. Later it was the opinion of the pediatric community to breast feed exclusively until more than six months. I believe it still is a trial and error issue. What we did worked well, if the baby had difficulty with any one food, it was easily identified. Good luck!

I would say there is a balance of importance from about 6 months. My baby is 7 months old and she needs her food as much as she needs her milk. I am finding though that her meals are sustaining her longer now than the milk.

Formula or breastmilk should be the primary source of nutrition until the child is at least one year old. Until then, solids are mostly for fun and practice.
