I agree. It's child's play. Anything that can be seen on your screen can be copied to your computer, then edited/tampered with at leisure.
As to precautions, if you're worried about your own photos, the only true defense is not to post them. Other than that, you rely on the trust you've built up with others, and the personal reputation you've established over the years with those that matter.
I've had my picture on the internet for years. So far as I know, no one has ever tampered with it. Why would they bother? It's not like I'm Brittney Spears.
