I am really not sure, but if you figure it out, don't let anyone know the password and you won't have to go through this again.

password protection in Microsoft is actually only something that total noobs suffer... there is no actual 'security' in any form in Microsoft products. Which is why all the 45,000 Microsoft computers on Microsoft.com, hotmail.com, and MSN.com run Linux.
It is a case of the real world 'Operations' and "Accounting" departments at Microsoft, falling 12 stories into the bloated phantasy world of the Microsoft "Marketing" department hyper-promise vapor-ware... Running upto 50X faster, using 1/12th the number of servors, truly saves some huge money, and looks great on the bottom line...
And here is the "Easy button" for your problem about the password that really is NOT a password...
Go to Google.com enter search for "lost windows 98 password"
and select one of the 5,240,000 free or small charge, password programs... I don't do it if it isn't Xwindows.
I run virus free Mac and Linux OSes, http://pclinuxos.com

Is it the powerup password or the user password? The powerup password (boot password, BIOS password) is the thing that, if set, comes just when you power up the machine, and you need to enter it. You can find online what to do about it - I believe http://www.pcstats.com/articleview.cfm?articleID=1501 explains how (it is for XP, but the powerup password procedure should be the same).
If it is the user password and windows 98, then you do not need the password to use the computer, though you might not be able to access everything without it.

I think that someone does not want the others to get access to the computer, I would say they should get another one cheap that run windows xp. about £100
But alternatively if you have the windows 98 CD you can format the disk to do this you need another computer to create what is called a boot up disk, take a floppy disk, go to add/remove programs and create a boot up disk make sure that the CD is in the drive
bring that back to the computer and insert it b4 starting it up then reinstall windows remember this will erase all data held on that computer

I would say they are up a certain smell creek...
I wasn't aware of a way to password lock a Windows 98 machine... Though it is a while since I had to use one...
Try going into DOS and formatting the hard drive...

personally if i could, i would upgrade to xp. you don't need a p word to do this.
but, there is softwre you can use such as ERD Commander, or password crowbar.
you will have to find these online somewhere if you can find an internet connection.
oh yeah. almost forgot..
if it is windows 98, just hit the cancel button on the log in window.
that should be easy enough.
