How about "used"?? You may be able to pick up a wrecked (preferably rear-ended) car, - with a very good engine in it, -it will have very little Value, as everybiody thinks age is important!!
If you llike the car, and the car is in very good condition otherwise, - an engine transplant should be fine! If yhou can do it yourself (as I do with all my cars), - you will be able to get by very cheaply! You can also pick up a used engine at a "junkyard", that is good for about $5-700 (wreck for maybe $250), and then you have the mechanic cost. It shouldn't cost much over $350 to have a good mechanic "drop" the engine in, as it is only about a day's work involved. Put it another way, see what a good running 93 would cost to buy at a used car lot, (deduct 20% -this will tell you about what you can buy one on the "street" for)! Now if it is near the same as estimate what the garage will charge you to install, - plus the price of the engine, you should about break even, (however you know what the car is like otherwise, -and now you only need to worry about the engine ). Another car is somebody elses "old problems", and you don't know what they might be.

Last insight. If you buy another car, it will probably be smaller, it might, - or might not get better mileage. However if it is smaller, it will be less comfortable, it will also be more vulnerable to physical damage to occoupants in case of an accident. Even with all the airbogs and other "safety equipment" available on the new cars, they still come out on "loosing end" in a collision with "bigger vehicles".... Mass has some value!! Obviously you want to drive in such a manner that you never cause a head on collision, - but they do happen once in a while, and one of the people involved isn't the cause, - -- if you are the "recipient, and not the cause, - you would like to come out of it alive at least!!

I have an 83 wagon that I am getting ready to ressurect for the same reason (it is called a Park Lane"). When on the road making 1,000 plus mile trips, I find that I can walk at the end of a day of driving, -- this is not the case with my 96 Neon! I am not willing to spend seveal days at end of trip recovering for 12 miles to the gallon! I'd rather be scocilizing with the people I went to visit on my vacation!

I wouldn't bother, unless the car has some sentimental value. It's 13 years old - the cost of the work would probably be more than the car is worth now. You'd be better off buying a used car that's 4-5 years old. It might cost you more, but in the long run, you won't have the reliability problems. Use the 1st link below to do some research on what you might like.

If you have to repair it, use the 2nd link below to find a shop in your area that has a good reputation.

I'm not related to these sites in any way, I just think they have good information.

Sorry, for the troubles. More than likely the answer is no. Check the blue book value for your car. What is the value verses the repair cost? More than likely it would not be worth it unless you can discount the labor cost through your husband doing the work himself or befriending someone who is a mechanic. More than likely putting your money toward another car instead of a major engine repair would be better.
