Hey before you go fooling around under the van, get the owners manual and look through the fuse diagrams for an instrument cluster or something like it fuse. Better yet use a test light or a volt meter and make sure you don't have any blown fuses. I have seen a few cases where "I got a stereo installed and when I got it back my speedo and gauges didn't work!" Freaking out just to find a blown fuse.
Then go check the speed sensor connection, then the sensor itself. If it has a cable make sure it didn't loosen or come off (both ends, tranny and speedo), sometimes cables break or work themselves loose.

The newer cars do not have a speedometer cable anymore, under the van on the left side (drivers side) just under the door there is your transmission, there is a speed sensor on the left side of the transmission, that controls your speedometer and your odometer, try unplugging it, checking the contacts, and re plug it back in... if that doesnt work, chances are you need a new speed sensor (V.S.S vehicle speed sensor) not a wheel speed sensor, it gets confusing and you might ask for the wrong part.

I'm not sure about the astro van and when they changed, but older chevy's have a cable that goes from the tranny up to the spedometer. Itis really easy to replace and you can usually get it in the junkyard for like $1. if it is electronic spedometer, You should check fuses before enything else. make sure that they are all good. If they are, try to find the wires that connect the spedometer and tranny. Wiggle them around to see if they are loose and check your ground. If that doesn't work, take wire and redo the old ones. It will take a little more time than the cable, but cost about the same. If that doesn't work, the problem is probably in the dash itself. I hope this helps!

ok more than likely you have a connection problem at the speed sensor on the tail housing for the speedometer.try wiggle that connection or put a tie rap around the tail hosing to hold it tight and try it.if that works get a new pigtail connecter.
the other thing is the exciter wheel on the main shaft of the trans could have slid down the output shaft to where the magnetic pick up cant get a read.to know this you would have to remove the speed sensor on the tail housing, then look for a gear like wheel with gaps in the teeth.if its not over the hole theres your problem.

Great write, SIN! You know I am 'not' the expert here, however, I'd like to make a comment anyway. I have read this many times now, and have found that the meter flows perfectly. It's all in how it's read. I've got the rhythm down and it reads out loud beautifully! Trust me. For a couple of moments, I was stumped at the part, 'From one whose garments worn were far more soiled', but it totally works. It's like playing an instrument and just getting the beat right. Say it out loud, you'll see, it works! Good job!

John C is Right. But make sure if your speedometer isnt electric that the gear in the tranny you replace is the same color. different color mean diffenrent tire size and will make your speedometer read the worng speed

one of two things happened, either the speedo cable broke, or the guage gave out, either way, you should be able to find cheap replacements either at a junk yard or on ebay, however, it may be extremely difficult to change depending on where it connects from the guage, and you may have to remove most of the dash to fix the guage.

Sounds like the speed senor is broken. It is located at the tail end of your transmission.

Damn that has alot of Miles. I guess after 250,000 it stopped counting. Well, I'd replace the whole instument cluster.
