The way it works is that someone may have bid a limit of £5 but the current bid stands at £3.11, if you enter less than £5 as your minimum bid then they will automatically outbid you. That is how it works! You will be the winning bidder if you enter an amount higher than their maximum bid. Annoying but true, sometimes it can help if you have a lok at the bidding history.

Hope that makes sense.

When you place a bid its what you want to bid as a maximum, So if the product is £10 and you would pay maximum of say £20 you bid will still be £10 untill someone bids higher and then your bid goes up. So you get outbid because that person has already bid higher.

When you bid on Ebay you can set a max amount. If someone else is bidding Ebay automaticly increases the bid to that persons max and doesn't change till the next bid is made.

You were outbid right away because your bid was still lower than the amount the person with the winning bid put in for his max bid.

Here's an example:
Bidding starts at $10.00
Julie puts in $40.00 making the current bid be $10.00.
Mark puts in $50.00 making the current bid be $40.00.
You put in $45.00 making the current bid $45.00 and Mark is still the winner.

The person who outbid you will keep on doing so until his maximum bid has been reached.

Its because users can put a maximum bid on items therefore if your bid doesnt exceed the maximum bid, their maximum bid will be used to rebid you by a small ammount until you exceed whatever they have entered as a maximum bid.
