Outside japanese restaurants, someone usually stands outside, welcoming passers-by and encouraging them to eat there. You don't often see it in the UK, but what would they be called? I don't want the Japanese title, I want the English equivalent.

Really? I've lived in Japan for more than 8 years and I've never once seen what you've described. Sorry I can't help you. I have no idea what the title would be. I just think that is weird that I've been here for this long and I've never seen it.

Now, in the US I've seen pizza places and such dress people up in costumes and try to get them to get customers to come in.

we get 'em in Melbourne- Lygon Street. I call them solicitors. I told one of them he was a solicitor once and he said "yeah except it's food not pussy!"
