I switched off everything at the power point last night - could this be the cause.

The information in that drop down bar is part of the History stored in temporary files on your PC. If you cleared the History, that will clear that drop down list. Also turning the PC off without shutting down could do it (but not normally). Turning off a PC without shutting down can cause all kinds of strange and unusual problems.

To avoid this in the future, you may want to add Favorites (also called Bookmarks) for the sites, rather than relying on the drop down list. The list is temporary, and will clear itself at time. Will also drop things off the list once they are 20 days or more older. Favorites, however, are permanent.
