In the UK, Halloween began the journey of commericialism following the 1981 film ET.
It was a slow journey but by the mid 90's shops were stocking novality toys, gifts and even sweets for the trick or treaters.
Over the last ten or so years Halloween has become a major celebration with parties, trick or treat, and a whole new feeling towards this time of year.
Part of the explosion os the novality costume and toys is that people have a lot more money to spend, so the manaufacturers can exploit this by making more stuff to sell.
If you walk around your supermarket you'll find adults and children looking at the halloween stuff, this coming week will see the shelves empty.
Halloween is finally being claimed as a children's time of celebration, fun and partying, which began 25 years ago. Long live the commericialised Halloween.

If the consumer wants costumes and Halloween decorations, it will capture the notice of manufacturers who are more than willing to provide the product. Interest in the celebration has grown over time and the Chinese are the biggest producers of themed merchandise. Halloween is a fun time for kids and adults and those who disapprove should shut up and stay in. Boooo!

Because the retailers are desperate to sell us more crap that we don't need. I hate Halloween because I don't eat sweets and I have to turn out my lights and pretend that I'm not home in order to get some peace. I refuse to give children my money. I don't mind giving to the children in my street as I know them but the others come from everywhere. When will it stop.

Simple. Little kids like to dress up and beg for candy! Adults like dressing up and scaring the crap out of those kids. Really... People enjoy anything that has to do with getting together and meeting people. Carnivals, parties or trick or treating. And just think another reason for people to whine about Americans doing something offensive... Gee that's unusual.

I know what you mean. In olden times when I was a kid we used to celebrate Halloween quite simply, ducking for apples, making lanterns, etc. Then the Americanisms started to kick in - dressing up, trick or treating, etc, etc. I'm not sure when it started, maybe 10-15 years ago. Personally I don't agree with trick or treating, but it's rife now.

Simple. The Americans took over the Irish Celtic festival of Samhain and commercialised it. Why? To make money of course.

Cos greedy people want to make money; they don't care what they use, ie Halloween, Mother's Day, Christmas etc etc.
