Little Miss Alien is wrong! We've had the books for a couple of years!
I've seen Wicked twice in London and twice on Broadway! it's the most incredible story, Idina Menzel and Shoshana Bean are incredible!
I love the show - I love it, I love it, I love it!

While the show does have its theatrics (yes, Elphaba flying at the end of Act I is a great effect) the show's book and score are relatively superficial, and not consistant with the book (or movie) The Wonderful Wizard of Oz. What the piece lacks, in my opinion, is a stronger connection with the two women. Their story is interesting, and the songs the two are given are interesting and harmonically beautiful. But the side stories and songs, are weak, and only detract from the main conflict.
All that said, any show that finds a new audience, in this case mostly young women, is a boon to Broadway and theater in general, because it encourages other writers and producers. For example, shows like Rent, while not universally beloved, have encouraged many young people into the theater that may never have gone before.
What would be disappointing, though, is if someone felt that this, or any other show, was "the best ever," implying that it could not be topped. This would only discourage people from seeing/writing new shows. A much better question would be "is this your favorite show right now?" You can always look back and say "at the time that was my favorite show," but don't be surprised if in a few years your opinion of it (or anything else) has changed (sometimes for the better, sometimes for the worse).

It's a good play, but what made it amazing were the performances by Idina Menzel and Kristen Chenowith. The songs are good, but they are very difficult to sing and nearly impossible to sing well unless you have an ungodly talent. I've seen it a few times and without the star power of two great actresses/singers, I think WICKED wouldn't hold up to all the accolades. AVENUE Q was far more clever, original and better as an entire package than WICKED is, though i enjoyed watching both shows.

hahah! First off it's not a stage play! It's a musical! ;-p Yeah, it's pretty amazing! I totally loved it when it first came out, and i'm actually going to see it on b-way this weekend with my folks. And for all you nay sayers out there, it's ok to not like it but don't just not like it because it's popular to not like it. I think everyone did a great job creating that piece. From the technical aspects, to the orchestrations, a lot of time an energy was put into making that show a success, and they did succeed. They've already cleared their overhead while the producers hasn't. The score is lively, and fun, as well as the script, and it's drawing together three generations of theatre-goers, so what's not to love!

I saw it in New York when it premiered (although it actually previewed in San Francisco) and I remember thinking the story was kind of cute but the songs weren't all that great. But it's a huge hit and every 15 year old girl in america that does theatre sings songs from it. So what the hell do I know? It's all based on personal opinion. I think Les Miserables and Sweeney Todd are two of the greatest stage musicals ever written. Some people might agree with me, others might not. But they're my favorite musicals. It's all subjective.

I loved it when I saw it on Broadway!
It's the only thing I've ever seen on Broadway, so I don't really have anything else to compare it too. The year I was a freshman, the drama club at school saw it with the original cast. The one I saw had the original Nessarose, and the lady from the Golden Girls. She got sick partway through and was replaced by her understudy. I can't wait to go with the drama club this year to see something.

I have yet to see it - I only found the book on Sunday (UK didn't publish it until this year) and am reading it. The book is stunning. I think it might make a better film than a play/musical though.

I loved it! Idina Menzel was fantastic!
It may have deviated from the book, and made it more kiddie-friendly, but the music is wonderful, and the acting and the effects...those flying monkeys were brilliant!
