I have a 99 Ford Ranger FWD 3.0 that will not shift out of park. I have tried using different keys and checking the parking brake with no help. I have heard this may be the ignition lockout switch, but want to get a second opinion. Anyone know where it is or how hard to replace? I really appreciate any help b/c this is my only vehicle.

Thank you,

Polarbaby, i have tried to press the brake to the floor without success. Thank you.

NickC, I have had the tranny replaced in the last year or so...hope that's not it. The key will turn and the truck will start

i do no longer stick to.. Your shifter is on the column top? The Ranger will initiate in independent yet no longer interior the park detente? Is that what you assert? if that's the case i could propose that your independent protection swap fixed on the transmission is beginning off to fail you. no longer a complicated activity to do. i could purchase a clean one vs one from a junk backyard. yet whilst your Ford won't pass into park then you definitely've a technique of it rolling far flung from you. there's a pin interior the transmission that engages a kit. that's called a parking pawl. So once you place the truck in park this pin locks up the rigidity line so it won't roll away. If that's your subject merely initiate utilising your emergency brake (called the parking brake) till you are able to pull the trans and get it fixed.

it may be the switch thats on the brake pedle that tells your car ok the brake is pressed its safe to put the car in drive try this:
look under the dash at the break peddle and you will see this swich it will have a wire harness disconnect the wire harness and use a small wire or a paper clip to "jump" the wires together then give it a try if this works then the swich is bad dont leave it "jerry rigged" replace it asap also check the fuse's there are some under the hood also

It could also be a bind in the shift linkage. I've also seen the transmission "park" get jammed when somebody slams it into park when rolling on a hill. Just a thought.

Yes, you are probably right.... although it could also be more serious....a tranny problem.
If you are right... just do what car thieves do and break the steering column.
Also you didn't say whether you could start the truck or at least turn the key over....
If the key doesn't work it could be the locking mechanism........
