morbidity = illness
mortality = death.

So the morbidity rate is the number of people living with (as opposed to dying from) a disease. Mortality rate is the number of poeple dying from it.

Morbidity rates moniter the volume of people alive but suffering from an illness or disease or otherwise (like caused by a road accident) as where Mortality rates moniter the amount of people who have died from a disease or illness or otherwise.
