Bad idea stated above. I tried that. I now have a motherboard that wont support the new 16x video cards or the new Core 2 Duo processor. If you buy your upgrades over more then two years time some of your components wont be able to be upgraded without replacing other components.
I build my own systems and building your own is the least expensive route to take. If you have the time and any desire to learn about how to assemble your own system you can build the 4 thousand dollar machine for about half that amount.
You could also contact the Dell company and get a quote on a system with the specifications you want. They will build to your specs, but be sure you tell them exactly which components you want or you will get the cheapest available to them at the time of assembly.
For example: Tell them what you want but forget to let them know you want a 500 watt power supply. They will build your machine and rate the components in it for the amount of wattage needed and you will get a power supply as close to that rating as they can give you. When you try to add another hard drive you will have to upgrade your power supply to accommodate for the extra wattage needed.
Learning how to build your own is always the least expensive, most rewarding route you can take. Resources on how to build your own system are free and plentiful on the Internet.

what you really want is a good vid card and lots of ram
you can turn most any puter into a good gamer with these.
why people spend 4, 5, 6 hell I've seen up to 20 thousand dollar puters! is just to have braging rights to owning the best of the pack! but you got to keep in mind that in a couple of year that killer 20K machine will be in the bargin bin and priced for a few hundred. Heck I remember when laptops first came out Five grand was a cheap one back then. today you couldnt sell it for one dollar at a yard sale.... save your money and get a good mid-range puter. (A nice 64 AMD) then buy yourself a killer graphics card. you'll be able to keep up with the big boys just fine!

This might 'sound' like an ad, but it's not. I subscribe to Maximum PC (maximumpc.com) and they are VERY into gaming. Just a couple of months ago, they made a machine from scratch for about $1000 (no, it didn't include EVERYTHING, but it was the 'box'). Check out their site and you'll get a lot of good info. Most of the 'gamer machines' have ASUS motherboards, nVidia dual cards, and liquid cooling.
check it out.

As most have mentioned the key element for a "gaming computer" is a fast video card and for enjoying the games to the fullest, a larger monitor. If you are a sound junkie then get a higher quality speaker set-up/headphones.

If you were going to spend a $4k on a computer my advice is don't!
Spend a grand now, a grand in a year, and so on, that way your computer is easily capable of playing the latest games, and in a year's time when it's getting a bit sluggish throw more money at it.
Spending $4k on a fast computer now will mean you have a brilliant machine today but in 4 years time do you think it will be as good as a $1k machine in 2010? :-)

1000$ would be enough.
But u need specification of the system.
3000+ AMD, 2GB RAM, dual graphic card would operate the games comes in 5 years.
