No but on Pedestrian crossings if you push the button then wait around 5 secs and then push again it does speed it up as the machine thinks there are now quite a few pedestrians waiting - try it, it worksl

No it doesn't, but it does make you feel better. Once you push the button the electrical connection is made...the end. However, we would all like to think that is inanimate object has a brain and will respond faster by pushing the button over and over again.

Does the car trip get over any sooner if you keep asking your Dad, "When are we going to be there?". I don't think so.

Pushing the elevator button a second, third, or fourth, time is simply for the pleasure of the pusher. There is no elevator talking to themselves saying, "Jees, there must be a lot of people on floor five, I'd better get there fast."

So push away if you desire, but no it won't make the elevator get there any faster.

Although it might 'help you to pass the time while waiting' (should you [sigh] need that sort of thing), 'Nope,' not at all. Once the button is 'pushed,' it's registered.

People, when it comes to 'lifts' / elevators often behave quite stupidly.

In the not Big but 'busy' hospital where I used to work, there were 2 lifts that serviced 6 floors, a ground, sub-basement and basement.

People who were (say) on the third floor, instead of walking down to the ground floor and exit, would wait to use these busy lifts. And often as not, becoming impatient, they would clamber aboard and ascending lift to travel all the way up and then all the way down.

Ok, that meant those waiting on any of the other floors who (and unable to walk) were wanting to exit the building, had to wait at the same spot while the then 'full' lift - time after time - went through the routine of stopping, doors opening, doors closing ~ and stopping at each floor in turn ~ until a 'space' just happened along.

A 2 minute (at the maximum) walk 'down' the stairs would have at least been 'healthy,' and at the other end of the scale, saved a great many people who 'needed' the lift a lot of time and unnecessary frustrations.

No, it doesn't arrive faster. But being the sad person that I am, I was speaking to a lift engineer about this once. He said that they especially design the buttons to be very strong because they know that people will push the buttons with force loads of times.

No... or maybe.

Read "Faster" by James Gleick. Amongst other things it covers the psychology of pressing buttons more than once - pedestrian crossings, elevators etc. - and whether companies may or may not alter software to detect urgency, for example more presses = more people waiting on one floor.

I think it might and i always do this because i am impatient. I also think that if anybody is pushing the button on another floor and the lift is going their way, by pushing the button again i bring it back to me again and jump the queue so to speak.

Nup. There are two arguments (psychologically) to this though.

1. It gives you something to do so you don't notice how long (or short) it's really taking.
2. It is a way of expressing frustration that you are waiting for it. By expressing frustration, whether genuine or not, you make yourself frustrated and it seems to take even longer.

Take your pick, but either way it's going to take the same amount of time. It just depends on how patient you are or are willing to be.

No, once the call button is pushed...that's pretty much it.But it sure makes you feel better...push it about a dozen times..also helps pass the time waiting for it to come....lol.
