EDIT: Oh, the original Apple logo, the Corporate Apple, it was designed by a graphics artist. Many people thought that it honored Alan Turing, who was involved with the early development of computers and also with the gay community (the rainbow color of the logo), but it had nothing to do with the movement.

Actually the bite symbolized knowledge - the Holy Bibe reference to Adam & Eve - Eve haven bitten from an apple from Tree of Knowledge, and the "bite" is a take off on the computer word "byte"

Small wonder that the Apple products are featured in many academic communities and institutions!

I take it you mean the logo? The original Apple logo featured Isaac Newton under the fabled apple tree and developed into the 3D Grey Apple it is today.

Or did you mean the advertising slogans...
"Think different" & "Everything is easier on a Mac."

Well, of course this is all personal opinion about useless computers. I wonder how the fastest growing brand of computer in the last year is so useless. Mine works fine and I find it very useful.

The Apple is not a religious symbol. It represents the fabled fruit that fell on Sir Isaac Newton's head when he was contemplating the basic laws of physics. Apple Computer even made a Newton brand PDA for a few years.

The raibow design was because Apple made the first color home computer (as well as the first home computer to use a mouse and the first home computer to use windows). Now they use solid color Apple symbol because it looks more modern.

Steve Wozniak created the slogan "Think different" which was criticized by some English teachers because they felt it should be "Think differently". But he said it means to think about what can be different, not to think in a different way. We could also criticize the phrase "all men are created equal" which should be "created equally" if it refers to the method of creating. Instead, it refers to people having each been created to be equal. Each of us can, thus, think to be different.

It only really represents anything special to Christians (the whole forbidden fruit thing), but to us non-religious types it just represents something half-eaten and practically useless...

Penguins on the other hand are sexy and cool! :D
