For that matter do any other engines fitted to 3 series suffer? The Alpinas?

No the new Vanos systems have been vary good. Even the older ones work well when taken car of and the proper oil was used.

No. The E46 M3 has never suffered from any problems with the vanos. The E36 was and still is plagued with problems and even vanos units replaced under warranty can fail after a couple of years.
However the vanos is a complicated little piece of kit so it can occasionally go wrong on any BMW, but the only one if has been a consistent problem oj is the 3.2 litre E36 M3 Evo

No, almost every E36 M3 had the vanos gear replaced by the time the car had done 100 000 miles but htis is not an issue on the E46 M3

not at all e36 was a bad spell for bmw ----------put that aside-we are theee best
