I love the film Amelie but was talking to a French friend about it who said it was slightly racist because it's set in a part of Paris with a large black population, yet there were no black characters in it.
Remembering the hideous embarrassment that was 'Notting Hill' - the film was slated for it's all-white vision of that part of London - was a similar fuss made in France about Amelie?

I suppose you could say that but may be we should look beyond the boundaries of race and just see the story. It was about love and love wins out on everything, including colour race and creed. Just enjoy it for what it was.

It was a bit of a fantastical film and very unrealistic. Most of the film was shot on location but have you noticed how there is no graffiti, no hookers, no junkies etc.? As, believe me, there are in the real location!

It's just his homage to a Paris that does not really exist-it was fun though! And when you think about it Notting Hill is full of Stockbrokers and David Cameron Acolytes these days isn't it

I loved both movies, but Amelie is one of my all time favorites.

This is a great question, I didn't realize that about Notting Hill and I'm curious to see the 'real' answers!

You got not so many actors in this movie but one is from north africa (larger foreign population). Indeed the young shopkeeper plays a big role in the movie...

If you do a movie about a private life of girl and her close relatives is it wrong not to have all the layer of society or race and so on represented in it ?

We can say that's an anti capitalist movie as no CEO or entrepreneur are in it ...
But the fact they are plenty of stuff not in it ... because the movie is about finding hapiness in the simple events of a simple life...

Don't think too much at times

I think the fantasy element of this film kind of lets it off the hook as it's depiction of Paris as a whole is very surreal.

Notthing Hill however......

In both cases I think the use of locations are used to back up social sterotypes that don't really exist.
