Actually, I don't like The Final Cut that much. I think it's the lack of Rick Wright.
Momentary Lapse of Reason isn't too terribly good, either. It's 80's pop. The only thing that makes it even listenable is the fact that 3/4 of Floyd are on it, and that David plays guitar. Past that, it really isn't that good. (Live performances do wonders to it, though... PULSE made some of those songs sound pretty good!)
Anyway, I think that Roger does whine a *bit* too much about his dad. I know that it's an important event in his life and all, but I thought that all of that would be out with The Wall. A whole album for someone that most of the band didn't know, though? Bah! I'm not bothered by the fact that it's an album dedicated to a sole person- I love Wish You Were Here- but the thing that bothers me is that it is someone that the fans do not even know!
We know about Syd, his drug problem, and getting kicked out of the band, and we know that he wrote some great songs and had a great singing voice, but what do we know of Roger's dad?
1. He fathered Roger Waters (Duh.)
2. He died in World War II (Inside Out timeline... not sure if it mentions it in there, too, as I do not have the book at my side)
3. Presumably, he was buried on the battlefield (Free Four)
Er... yeah, that's about it. The fans know zilch about him. The thing I like so much about Pink Floyd is that the heyday albums have an underlying story or theme. Animals has Orwelllian themes and is based on society, something we can relate to. Dark Side of the Moon is about insanity, something we all have seen and have experienced at some time. The Wall... too much story line for here, but it is full of emotions we all have been through- love, desolation, and anger among others. Wish You Were Here is about Roger "Syd" Barrett, someone we all know and love. The Final Cut is about... Roger's papa. Who is that? We were introduced years ago in Free Four, but we still don't know him. He died in war. That's all we know.
To me, The Final Cut is not much, as I do not know much about Roger Waters' dad. It would be much better if it was maybe about something else.
Speaking of Roger's dad, there he is *again* whining about it in Us And Them.

Hello. Not very good in my opinion.Basically a Water's solo album.Although there are some good classical sounding arrangements here and there.Poor songs. BQ)Yes. Not Now John but i only think it's good because of the Gilmour solo. Not a great song BQ2)The Wall BQ3)Yes ive seen The wall at earls court in 1980 london.it was good at the time.I'm sorry to be an old cynic but i'm not a Floyd fan at all anymore.Waters is still over milking The Wall today.Just an honest opinion.

The Final Cut is an amazing piece of work, totally reflective of the social climate in which it was made. So many people overlook it in favour of more obvious choices by Floyd however in my opinion is is their greatest work. Can't comment on Lapse of Reason as have not listened enough to judge it.

I totally agree, The Final Cut is a classic and although im a Floyd fan til i die, they were never the same without Waters, Momentary Lapse and Division Bell didn't do it for me.

I agree. "The Final Cut " is not as dated as lapse that's for sure.I also think it is a better record by far.It is sad that that album gets overlooked and coming out on the heels of"The Wall ",people wanted more of the same.Good point big guy!!!

IMHO the Division Bell blows away both. I'd rather listen to Wish you were Here than either of those.

i dont think either one is their best, but it gripes me that critics get paid to spout off about stuff they dont know anything about. floyd is one of the greatest bands ever. hey taz c- great to know someone else still remembers 'echoes'! i played it the other day & the floyd fans spazzed out. most of them had never heard it!

I think they should get "Another Brick" & throw it at the person who said that. Pink Floyd are great. I hope I find someone who "Echoes" that view.
