I learned the basics in about a year. This means that you can comfortably move your fingers to make basic cord progression.I bought a huge Beatles book that had the guitar frets at the top of the treble clef bar and since I knew the way the songs went it was not too hard. But your fingers don't want to move like you need em too. This takes like I said bout a year... The Beatles wrote songs that were very easy to play..Later you learn your bar cords and how to modulate from on chord to another..Basically music is math .. You'll learn this later on...

Practice about 1 hr per day, for about the 1st year. You'll be playing pretty nice beginner music in 6-12 months. So yes a few hundred hours of practice to play nice music. You'll need to practice in every increasing amounts to keep advancing.
Can't learn from a book or website. You need a teacher.

It wont take too long before you can pick up a tune. Just practise mate. As soon as you start get there though your'll be bitten by it and you wont be able to put it down. Be prepared for some frustration but stay with it and you'll love it!
Id say just about a month of practising and you'll have some basic tunes down.
Check this site out. Its good for beginners learning.

People learn at different rates and have different lengths of practicing and learning. Also depends on the style you want to learn.
See how much time you can spare to learn, like an hour a day maybe.
There is a yahoo group for learning which is good. If you do a search.

I can't play guitar but my bf Gerlad can and he's been playing since he was 3. He just like in the last four years got so good he could not only play some famou songs but do 'em better then the actual ppl and he was only 11 then. It depends mostly on how much u practice and how quickly u learn.

I think that if you have the apptitude and eagerness to learn, it will help you greatly. My Nephew taught himself and now runs his own band. This happened because of hours of enjoyable practising and his natural ability.
On the other hand his Uncle (my husband) took an urge to learn to play the guitar and he failed miserably as he did not have the motivation or dedication to practice for hours on end.The consequence of which he has a guitar broken strings and all
just gathering dust in the corner.
I think if you can find someone who is a born natural they will teach you to learn to play for a pint or two down at your local.
Good Luck>

Well, if you just learn one song well, you already can play reasonably, and people would enjoy hearing that song. Go to www.e-chords.com, and search for the song you like and it will tell you the chords. Hope you can use chords, they are fairly simple. Can you sing as well? I would give you lessons, but, i live in london hehe. And i would give them very cheap, because i would just be so happy to be around a guitar, i left mine in lithuania. Good luck. Its great when people can play an instrument!!

thats a good site with guitar tabs. if you cant read tabs theres lots of websites that can help you with that. all you need to know is the tune for the guitar part of the song and it tells you how to play it.
good luck with you guitar playing!

i have been playing guitar since i was 14 i am 31 now and im still learning things on the guitar. even if you learn everything on the guitar. you might come across someone who uses a different technique than what you use to play certain things.and you might find it easier to do it that way. even if you mastered it the other way, it still could be easier to play it differently
