Please help explain this to me. At 20 weeks, I cannot feel the baby move (this is my first pregnancy) and it feels as if my stomach is getting smaller. I am under a lot of stress because I just found out that my mother is going to die of cancer and only has 2 months to live. I have not noticed and bleeding but I have shooting and constant pains in my side. how long before I would notice bleeding if I was having a miscarriage? Please help.

Each pregnancy is different. With my first baby, I wasn't able to feel him move until about 24 weeks, but with the second, I felt him around 19 weeks. If you had for sure felt the baby before, then that is something to be concerned with. As for your tummy getting smaller, that may just be your mind in overdrive from stress. The pains in your side could be the ligaments holding your uterus in place stretching. It REALLY hurts for awhile, but eventually subsides. In any case, you should go to your OB for an exam to make sure all is well with the baby.

See your doctor or midwife and talk over your fears. I would hazard a guess that you are not experiencing a miscarriage. The pain could be due to stress. At 20 weeks you would not necessarily feel movement and the baby could have just shifted position which may make your bulge appear smaller. Dont panic, but talk to someone soon.
Its awful about your mum, its bad at any time but now is worse. I feel for you, having lost my mum recently too. Take care of yourself and the little one!

If you are concerned about your pregnancy, you should see a doctor especially if you are experiencing pains. The pains could be due to indigestion or gas though so don't jump to any conclusions. At 20 weeks, I didn't even know it was possible to feel the baby move yet! Are you sure?
