A lot depends on how you are using the term respect. If you are talking about public signs of respect in the US then there has been a shift toward informality. People are seldom addressed formally. Business attire is more casual. Introductions are not as formal. Social behavior in general does not have as many rules.
If you are referring to respect of one generation to another - people have been moaning about the younger generation having no respect since Hesiod wrote Works and Days long before the birth of Christ.

People took responsibility for their actions rather than trying to sue someone else. Whether related to you or not, elders were given respect. Also, teenagers did not expect to have everything given to them. If you wanted a big ticket item, you earned the money and bought the item. You were not embarrassed to have your first car be a used vehicle--you had a car. So many today expect to start at the top and live the same lifestyle as mom and dad without putting in the time and struggles mom and dad did.

I was born in the early 70's and we were ruled by fear. Step out of line and we got the strap. We were very much brought up with the "children should be seen but not heard theory".
Now I have 2 young children of my own and I don't smack and value their opinions. However they have no respect for me, their father or teachers. Although I disagree, perhaps ruling by fear isn't such a bad thing. God knows I never got inot any trouble.
