chemical changes in the body can induce an altered state of the senses - for example, diabetics experiencing a 'hypo' (hypoglycaemic attack - or low blood sugar due to too much insulin and not enough carbohydrate) often report a metallic taste to sweet things. It is a hightened sense of taste and smell. It happens before an epileptic fit, sometimes.

The' taste' associated with metals (assuming they are clean) is due to an electrochemcal effect between the metal itself and tongue tissue. It is broadly related to the way you get a sharp pain when a piece of aluminium foil touches a tooth filling.

our tongue is composed of several taste buds... Each group of taste buds.. have their own type or receptor. if a metal taste sweet, your taste buds receive probably a small amount of glucose, if it tastes sour, your most likely receiving an acidic substance; if it tastes bitter, your most likely receiving basic or alkaline substances and salty, your most likely receiving electrolytes, such as Sodium.
