Over the years the NME and (the now defunct) Melody Maker championed many bands who then promptly disappeared off the face of the earth! Does anyone know what happened to any of the following: Chicks (female Irish teenage punk trio), New Electrics (indie band, had a couple of singles, Beautiful Mind and Get It Together) and Pop Tarts (late 80's)?

New Electrics

Signed to label: Animal Noise

From: Birmingham, West Midlands

The New Electrics describe themselves as "Psyche-pop, the polar opposite of the brain dead chart zombies grinning pure plastic over old Bee Gees B-sides." They are Nick Ingram (vocals/guitar), Ben Marsden (guitar/vocals), Mark Lees (bass) and Pete Dabbs (drums) who met at Birmingham Uni. New Electrics released their first single 'Beautiful Mind' in 1999 on tiny label Interior before being signed to Fruition records who gave this single a proper release. It was given single of the week by Mark and Lard on Radio 1 and earned the guys interviews/reviews in music magazines including NME and Melody Maker (RIP). They then released 'Get Together' which also had air play on Radio 1. Melody Maker even described them as 'Quite possibly the best new band in the country.' New Electrics dissapeared for about a year and a half but are now putting the finishing touches to their debut album which should hopefully be out early next year. A great band to see live with singer, Nick, having a phenominal stage presence. When asked about the New Electrics, Nick replied "We wanna entertain people and there's nothing better than making someone smile". I think this sums them up perfectly.

The chicks were all tragically killed by a flock of seagulls in 1987 during a video shoot. The New Electrics disbanded after the lead singer was electrocuted by a microphone which damaged his vocal chords. Their guitarist, also a victim, lost 8 of his fingers in the accident. The Pop Tarts were arrested by the North Korean army on charges of drug smuggling and animal trafficking. They were sentenced to 300yrs in Pying Wong prison camp where they remain to this day. They are still together as a band and plan to start their prisoncamp tour next March. It is believed that their manager was mauled to death by a giant Panda during the arrest.
