I was wondering the same thing myself. I'm guessing that Thailand must import a lot of raw materials from Australia for the Howard government to agree to it.

Too bad the Aussie government didn't put tariffs on cars though....why move a factory to Australia to avoid taxes when you can open it up in Thailand and sell the cars in Oz duty free?

Both Thailand and Australia are seeking trading partners and while Thailand is Buddhist and thereby limits the imports of meat, Australia has crude oil, and Thailand has forestry products that provide lumber, and other raw materials. Thailand has a large variety of handcrafts, precious and semi-precious stones and exports many types of fruits...even here in China, we use Thailand fruits.

Well...I think that Australia have had many years of good relationship with Thailand, and to answer your question further, a good relationship with any Country in Asia, make sense, because we are part of Asia, and Asian countries are our very good business partners too.
