The dog is apprehensive that the cat
may falsely complain about him to the
master by saying that the dog was
sleeping and not doing the Guard's
Job.

And may be the dog is jealous about
not been able to climb a tree to catch
the cat. Once upon a time
a cat after biting a dogs'
tail climbed a tree and started making
funny gestures at the dog as it was
unable to climb. Sometimes the cat
would spin its' tail. This had infuriated
the dog and the dog told the entire
brotherhood about the incident. By
the spread of word of mouth, the
entire world of dogs came to know about
the incident and from that day onward,
they fight and hate each other.

I have both a cat and a dog and they are the best of chums.

I think that nowadays domesticated dogs run after cats because of the 'chase' instinct not because they hate them. My cat purrs around my cockatiel but will still run after birds in the garden - never catches any thank goodness:-)

My dogs don't care about cats unless they cat is: a. running from them or b. a strange cat running from them. Otherwise they get along fine with our 3 cats.
