Hi Again:

You get scurvy from a lack of Vitamin C. This was a huge problem on ships in the olden days. Oranges have tons of Vitamin C.

Rickets is a lack of vitamin D in childhood. Codliver oil helps as does sunlight.

I hope this helps.

Scurvy is a disease caused through lack of vitamin C. Sailors were issued with limes, when they went on long voyages, to prevent this. That is why an archaic nickname for sailors is 'limeys.'
Rickets is caused through a lack of vitamin D in the diet. This explains why many people than come over from sunny countries develop the problem as vitamin D is synthesised by the body using sunlight. People in hot countries tend not to bother about too much vitamin D in their diet because of this, so when they come over to not-so-sunny UK, their body doesn't produce enough to compensate for the lack in their diet.

RICKETS is a severe and prolonged vitamin D deficiency that leads to softening and weakening of the bones in children. Vitamin D helps the body absorb calcium and phosphate, which children need to build strong bones. Good sources of dietary vitamin D are vitamin D-fortified formulas and milk.

SCURVY is a disease that results from lack of vitamin C, which is required for correct collagen synthesis in humans. The scientific name of vitamin C, ascorbic acid, is derived from the latin name of scurvy, scorbutus. Scurvy leads to the formation of liver spots on the skin, spongy gums, and bleeding from all mucous membranes. The spots are most abundant on the thighs and legs, and a person with the ailment looks pale, feels depressed, and is partially immobilized.
