i read about them in a recent 'fish supply catalogue' not mutch info there on sources

They are usually available at most tropical fish stores. There are regular and long finned versions.
Unfortunately they are extinct in their native habitat - White Cloud Mountain -China, as the water quality has degraded to the point where they can't survive.

Triangle Tropical Fish in Durham, NC has them quite often.
Also, I've seen them in random Petsmarts, too.

You can get them at many local fish stores and Petsmart also usually has them. They're pretty common.
