She's in middle school now. Of course, the whole district is happy that she plays the oboe, but she's been talking about the marching band when she gets to high school. I've never heard of oboes marching. If she needs another instrument, when should she begin learning it.

Absolutely! First of all, she WANTS to do this, so she will most likely put out the effort required to 'catch up' to the high school level. Secondly, she already has half the battle won...she reads music, has developed an armature, and has a couple years behind her to prove she really does know she likes it. If she is musically talented, she will be able to pick up different instruments very quickly throughout her lifetime.
I, know because I was one of those kids, and still find it easy to
add on another instrument quite easily.

The oboe is a very unique instrument, and somewhat difficult to play in comparison to most others. From her level, she will pick up the clarinet, saxophone, or other woodwinds without any trouble.

I would start with the Clarinet. The oboe is really for people that are older. The double reeds for the oboe are quite expensive and the Clarinet is easier to play. I first learned to play the Clarinet and then went to the Oboe.

I know this may sound way way way out there but why not have her taught the bagpipes? She obviously has a musicalability as the oboe is not an easy instrument to master. If she could learn the pipes then a whole new world would open to her.Check your local area or google bagpipes and then follow the prompts from there.

Be proud. She will get a scholarship to college for playing the oboe, because oboe players are so rare.
