Core 2 Duo is a good choice. It is equipped with latest technology and it is Intel's trump card now.
Pentium D (3.4) might be slower a bit than Core 2 Duo (1.86) because Core 2 Duo is a dual core processor then you'll have to multiply it's speed by 2 become (3.72)
3.4 GHz and 3.72 GHz.. see the difference?
I will recommend E6600 or E6700 for Core 2 Duo processor variants since they have a high "performance per price" rating.
Hope it helps

wen u foresee the future, core 2 duo is best. but at present, there are very very less applications and OS that utilises the full capacity of dual processors. What applications we normally use now are not coded for multiprocessing techniques. They handle only multitasking. At present Pentium 3.4ghz will obviously be faster, but in future its core 2 duo which is going to win the race.

Core 2 duo! It is the newest technology which found out that the slower clock speed makes less heat, but the new technology makes it work more effective.

Ah, Grasshopper! You want to fly the jet aircraft, with over 400 knobs, dials, and buttons, but, you have not yet taken the preliminary ground school!
Best first computer is a single processor used machine, and a FREE copy of http://pclinuxos.com
I get great used Dells, with warranty, from http://cheaptronicsdepot.com
BECAUSE, they are already fully built, tested, and then, after about 3 to 6 months, you are ready to try your hand at assembly of a NEW machine with all the new parts!
