nice question. I think I know why. The movies is an industry and "In a movie" is short for "in the movie industry", whereas tv is just related to what you see at home. You are literally "on the television set"
I think?

TV is a generic medium, encompassing many different programs, whereas a movie is a specific entity. Or something!

i think because of the magnitude. movie hall is a big structure while a TV is a small one. we go into a movie hall and see somone in a big movie screen, while we see somone ON TV, on a small screen.
no wonder its "quirky english"

in a movie as in ' in a play or musical ' - it is the actual show
on television, this talks about the vehicle that allows or permits people to watch said movie, like you are ' on the big screen'
i think...

because of grammer, with tv your "on" each week or whatever, but with a film your "in" the movie, which is shown "on" a big screen or whatever for a limited time.. listen its not important so don't worry about it..

A "movie" is the media, the "place" is the cinema.
The "TV" is the "place", the media is a television programme.
You can be in a television programme.
